Wayne “Woshie” Stephen Silva passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the age of 65. Wayne was the son of the late Harry and Dorothy Taylor Silva. He is survived by his daughters, Holly Odom (Michael) and Lori Follette (David) and his four grandchildren, Cooper, Jacob, Reese, and Carter. He is also survived by his siblings, Terry Silva (Suzanne), Donald Silva (Sue), Phil Silva, Catherine “KK” Melancon (Roy), many nieces and nephews, and his longtime companion, Jan Bisso. He is preceded in death by his brother Gary “GeeGee” Silva.
Wayne graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie where he played baseball and basketball and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond where he played baseball. He was a retired Coach and Physical Education Instructor in the Jefferson and Orleans Parish School Systems. He was also an Associate Scout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Professional Baseball Organization. He coached baseball, basketball, football and golf for many years at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Riverside Academy in Reserve, and False River Academy in New Roads, Louisiana. He spent several summers at baseball camps for Mississippi State University, LSU, and University of Southern Mississippi. He was a well respected coach who earned multiple state titles in baseball. Some of his honors and awards include All Division Pitcher, Diamond Club Semi-Pro Player of the Year, and multiple baseball Coach of the Year designations.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Boulevard, Metairie, LA. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, corner of Canal Blvd and City Park Avenue, New Orleans, LA.
