On June 10th, the day after her 89th birthday, Eleanor Jean Willoughby died peacefully at home. Beloved wife of the late Ford Andersen Willoughby, Sr., Jean is survived by her son Ford Andersen Willoughby, Jr., brother Gerald C. Suhling, grand-daughters Ruby E. and Tess C. Willoughby, daughter-in-law Sherri Cutler Willoughby, and sister-in-law Joan Young. She was the devoted daughter of the late Dorothy L. Suhling and August F. Suhling. She will be missed by the many family friends who called her “Aunt” Jean, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
But for the 7 glorious years she lived in Jamaica, WI, Jean was a life-long resident of Uptown. She attended Eleanor McMain Secondary School and Loyola University. She worked tirelessly for many years with the United Methodist Women’s organization, and was on the auxiliary of the Poydras Home, along with serving numerous other community organizations. Post-Katrina she became an active member of the Broadmoor Improvement Association, and loved to decorate the Welcome To Broadmoor signs with seasonal flair. She will be remembered for her joie de vie, generous civic spirit, and as a fount of creativity, famous for her magnolia garlands, Mateus bottle clowns and papier-mache Christmas ornaments. She loved entertaining, was the quintessential hostess, and a fabulous cook (Marcos, we found her cheesecake recipe). A memorial will take place in early fall.
