Alice Ker LeSassier Barber died peacefully at her home in Metairie, La. on November 21,
2017. She was born February 5, 1923 in Woodville, MS, the daughter of William LeSassier and
Katherine Towles. She had one sister, Suzanne LeSassier. She was raised in West Feliciana
Parish, earned a B.A. from Southeastern Louisiana University, and a Master of Social Work from
She worked for several years in social services and child welfare both in Louisiana and
California, where she worked with children and also as a supervisor. She became a member of
the faculty of the School of Social Work at UC Berkeley. Later she joined the faculty at Virginia
Commonwealth University School of Social Work in Richmond, Virginia, from which she retired
as Professor Emerita after 28 years of service at the rank of associate professor. She will be
missed by her many friends in Richmond.
After her retirement, Alice moved back to New Orleans to care for her sister Suzanne. She
made many friends here, including Robert Rickey and his sister Donna, Gary Vos, Tyisha
Jackson, and Keith Koppens. Sincere thanks to all those who helped care for her, Peggy,
Darlene, Trellis, Monique, and those with Passages Hospice. She will be remembered as a
fiercely independent, extremely frank, intelligent, and generous woman. She had a wry sense
of humor and was a loyal and caring friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Suzanne LeSassier, and her son
Richard. She is survived by her sister-in-law Anne B. Bowers, and her cousin Nora T. Marsh.
Services will be private. Her ashes will be buried at Ouida Plantation in West Feliciana Parish.
