ARTHUR J SILVERMAN MD

April 13, 1923 ~ September 24, 2018 (age 95)

Dr. Arthur Silverman passed away at Ashton Manor in Luling, LA on September 24, 2018 at the age of 95. His wife Merce Silverman, to whom he was married for 63 years, passed away in 2008. Art Silverman is survived by his children, Linda Silverman Buczek, Jim Silverman and Jon Silverman, by daughters-in-law, Vicki Whiting (Jim) and Lindy Silverman (Jon), and by grandchildren Ben Buczek (Linda), Max Simonet and Jacob Silverman (Jim) and Jessica Silverman (Jon). Merce always called him “Artie”. As an accomplished urologist and surgeon affiliated with Touro Infirmary Hospital, he was Dr. Arthur Silverman. When Dr. Silverman became a full-time sculptor during the 1980s, he was fittingly known as either “Doc” or “Art”. Art Silverman was an intellectually curious man who developed fluency in Spanish so that he could talk without a translator to his many Spanish-speaking patients. Later, he became fluent in French and Italian. Silverman’s curiosity extended to math. His art explored the representation of the geometry of tetrahedral, intriguing the national math-in-art community. Artie and Merce Silverman created and lived in an art-filled home and garden in a former neighborhood tavern in uptown New Orleans. Silverman’s sculptures were rendered in aluminum, steel, bronze, stone and water; he also painted and drew tetrahedral forms. His most prominent sculpture is a 20-ton, 60-foot tall fountain on the corner of Poydras and Loyola Avenues. Other notable works are placed in New Orleans on the campuses of Tulane, Loyola, Xavier and the University of New Orleans, New Orleans City Hall and private and corporate collections. Silverman sculptures can also be found in collections across the United States. The Silverman family thanks the staff at the Ashton Manor who provided excellent care to Art Silverman in his final years. Linda and Jim recognize and thank Jon for his loving care and support of both of our parents and of us. A remembrance will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 1 – 4 PM at the Newcomb Art Museum, located on the uptown campus of Tulane University. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to a charity of your choice in Art Silverman’s name. Arrangements by Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. Information 504-835-2341.
