Born Juliet Hilda Faine, daughter of the late Mary Loket and Morris Faine, in Memphis, Tennessee, October 10, 1920, she married the late Daniel “Dan” Nowak on February 23, 1941 in Memphis. Together, they had three children, Dale Nowak Singer (Alan), Hal Nowak (Claudia) and Randy Nowak Kornblith (Harvey).
Julie and Dan lived in New Orleans where they worked together in their store, Nowak’s Menswear, on Canal Street. Julie, the buyer for the store, was known for her elegant taste and fashion flair.
Julie spent years serving in civic organizations including the Boards of NCJW, Touro Infirmary Auxillary and Touro Synagogue. She also chaired the Lifeline committee of Jewish Family Service for many years.
Julie loved socializing with her many friends, and especially enjoyed her games of Bridge and Mah Jong.
Over the years, Julie became affectionately known as Gigi to her 7 grandchildren Michael Singer (Courtney), Sheri Levin (Eddie), Wendi Berkman (Jeff) Benjamin Nowak (Beth), Blaiss Nowak, Jonathan Kornblith (Rema), Michelle Kornblith and 11 great grandchildren: Dana, Molly, Audrey, Leo, Robbie, Jay, Maggie, Zoe, Siena, Sophia and Ethan.
After losing her beloved partner Daniel in 1997, Julie continued to find joy in her family and friends and the city of New Orleans. She evacuated to Atlanta during Hurricane Katrina to be with her children and grandchildren in that city. She spent her remaining years there, where she especially loved dining at her son Hal’s signature steakhouse. Julie was always the best dressed woman in the room.
